A visible balance in Rabby does not mean that account can sign. Check whether the watched address belongs to your wallet, a hardware device, or an exchange.

A user trying to connect Rabby to another service saw “Unable to sign with watch-only address” and “You can only use imported addresses to sign.” They had pasted a Coinbase receive address into Rabby and could see it there, so the greyed-out button felt like a Rabby connection fault. In their public question, the useful clue was who controlled that address. A watch-only address lets Rabby display an account, but it cannot prove ownership or approve a transaction. Rabby's current explanation says a public address alone gives the wallet no signing authority.

Before retrying the button, I would trace the address back to its source. Was it created in a wallet you control, shown on a hardware device, or copied from an exchange's Receive page? Those lead to very different next actions. The diagram above is an original decision aid; it is not a Rabby screen.

Why can Rabby show the balance but not sign?

Anyone can add a public address to watch its activity. That is useful for checking a balance, but it does not provide the private signing key. The exact “watch-only” error is therefore about authority over the selected account, not proof that the tokens disappeared or that a blockchain transaction failed. The Rabby help article separates viewing from sending and says Rabby cannot move assets from an address it only watches.

Rabby also shows a warning before using a Watch Mode address to receive assets. The crop below comes from that same official Rabby article; the account balance and address have been removed. It is a receive warning, not the signing-error screen.

Is the watched address actually your own wallet?

If you created the address in a wallet you control, verify the full public address in that original wallet and compare it with the one selected in Rabby. If they differ, switching to an unrelated account will not authorize the watched address. If they match, use the original wallet's supported signing method or Rabby's legitimate account connection route, after confirming what the requested signature does. Rabby's help page describes importing the corresponding key for a self-owned address, but never enter a hardware wallet's recovery phrase into a browser extension just to resolve this message. Connect a supported hardware signer through its device workflow instead.

If you no longer have the signing method for a self-custody address, simply watching it in Rabby cannot restore control. Rabby cannot identify its owner or recover funds from the public address, as its help article makes clear. Do not test random seed phrases or approve an unrelated request.

Did you copy an exchange deposit address?

In the reported Coinbase case, the address came from an exchange's receive flow. It was not the user's Rabby signing account. Pasting it into Rabby could show an address, but could not turn the exchange-controlled address into a self-custody wallet. Rabby's official guidance says to contact the address owner or platform when you do not control it.

If you were only trying to enter an exchange address as a withdrawal destination, step back and check the sending service's current withdrawal flow; a destination address may not need to sign, but an ownership-verification step would. Do not infer that the old Reddit workaround still applies to today's interface. If assets were already sent to the exchange deposit address and are not credited, contact the exchange through its official support route with the public transaction details. Rabby cannot sign on the exchange's behalf or guarantee a recovery.

The practical answer to “Rabby unable to sign with watch-only address” is to identify who controls the exact selected address. Use the matching signer if it is yours; use the hardware device's supported route if that is the signer; contact the exchange or other owner if it is theirs. The balance you can see in Watch Mode is only evidence that the public address has activity, not that you can spend it.
